Dr P.K. Santhakumari is an Ayurvedic ophthalmologist[1] and the founder and director of Matha Ayurveda Eye Hospital.[2] She is also the Professor of Shalakya Tantra[3] (Ayurvedic Ophthalmology) at the University of Kerala in India, where she has been teaching ophthalmology for B.A.M.S and M.D students for 32 years, and President of the Shalakya Specialists Association (SSA) and The Association of Shalakis (TAS).

After completing primary and secondary education at Thrissur in Kerala, Santhakumari graduated in Ayurvedic Medicine (B.A.M.S) from Kottakkal Ayurveda College, Kottakkal, and M.D in Netrachikitsa (Ayurvedic Ophthalmology) from the Government Ayurveda College in Thiruvananthapuram. She served as Professor and Head of the Department of Ayurvedic Ophthalmology (Shalakya Thantra) at the Government Ayurveda College Hospital in Kerala.
Santhakumari has been appointed to boards of various Ayurvedic research foundations and universities, including the National Research Institute cheruthuruthy, National Institute of Ayurveda Jaipur, Gujrat Ayurved University in Jamnagar,[4] S.N. Ayurveda College Hospital Puthur and Matha Ayurveda Society.
Santhakumari authors for various journals and research foundations including Oushasham, Apta, and Punarjani. She has authored approximately 100 referenced articles and one textbook[5] (a textbook of ophthalmology in Ayurveda,[6] a C.C.I.M approved textbook for B.A.M.S students).[7]
Santhakumari is the recipient of various National and State awards including the "Best Doctor Award"[8] by the Department of Health of the Government of India.
Santhakumari has conducted various government-aided research in Ayurvedic ophthalmology such as Diabetic Retinopathy, Macular Degeneration, Degenerative Myopia etc. She played a key role in the popularising of Jalaukavacharanam (a biological Ayurvedic treatment procedure) in the treatment of eye diseases among the Ayurvedic community.
